Josephine's mother secures the services of lawyer Victor Santini, an ambulance chaser type, who doesn't seem to be the right man to defend her daughter. At the trial, Mrs. Ellis, exerts her dominance in getting the best lawyers money can buy on behalf of his son. Santini surprises by showing an intensity one never knew he had going head to head with the astute DA Phil Stanley. The biggest confrontation pits Santini against Mrs.

Clifford Odets, a playwright on his own right, tried his hand as a director for a second time the material he had written directly for the screen. The results are a mixed bag, with some surprising acting from Anthony Franciosa and Sandford Meisner, another theater man that knew a thing, or two, about how to upstage the 'stars' of the film.

Rita Hayworth underplays her Josephine and shows, at time, traces of the terrible disease that ended up killing her. Gig Young's character does not make too much sense, and he is too old to give the audience an idea he was a "mamma's boy".

Mildred Dunnock has a good scene as she testifies and is grilled by Santini. Hugh Griffiths is seen as the judge in charge.

The film has a theatrical feeling, perhaps because the way it only uses interiors, and the second half happens inside a court. Red-Barracuda 15 November Rita Hayworth plays a woman wrongly accused of murder, Anthony Franciosa plays her lawyer.

This is a fairly solid, if routine, courtroom drama. You probably pretty much know where its basically going from the start and, to b honest, it sort of goes there. EdgarST 15 April Verbose, old-fashioned, studio bound and highly theatrical court- room melodrama, due to director-playwright Clifford Odets, who wrote the screenplay and provided mostly dialogues and plot points, but no cinematic flight.

Being a man of letters, his best film work was as screenwriter of films like "Humoresque", "Notorious" and "Sweet Smell of Success". As a director, here Odets does not even take the camera out of the sound stages for a single moment, and in spite of having James Wong Howe as cinematographer it is neither an attractive wide-screen black and white film in the tradition of "The Innocents", "Sons and Lovers" or "Rapture": in fact, this movie should have been in color.

But somehow it works, in spite of our desperation for the long, endless interrogations especially those conducted by Sanford Meisner. The men are fine too Franciosa, Young, Meisner, Griffith, Adler and the rest but this is a woman's picture. YabbaDabbaDabba 30 October I started watching this movie with somewhat low expectations based on comments about the director, the script and blah blah.

To be honest it didn't grab me right out of the box, but it it grew on me quickly, especially the sad, lonely and hopeless housewife done so expertly by the lovely Rita Hayworth. Gig Young and Tony Francisco played their part with great expertise as did each actor, which I is a tribute to the director.

I ended up having a great appreciation for Clifford Odets' approach and directing skills and don't understand why he was panned at the time. I wish he had gone on with other movies. Overall, it is just an enjoyable drama and is well worth the time to watch. The illicit affair and the trial it spawned. Clifford Odets possibly only foray into courtroom drama is a most successful one as evidenced by The Story on Page One.

Anthony Franciosa, many MST fans will remember him as being the star of the 80's ABC series The Finder of Lost Loves stars at what first seems to be a similar character to Paul Newman's in The Verdict, a drunk, down on his luck, lawyer getting the case of his career that will either make or break him.

At the 45 minute mark we get the whole sordid affair in triplicate and one wonders why Odets decided to relate the story in such in way but as the rest of the film plays out at the trial, we see he shrewdly grounded the defendants' sympathies in our hearts whereby every setback and revelation resonates as much for us as for the protagonists.

Coming out in the same year that the topical, yet ultimately sloppily made Anatomy of the Murder, The Story on Page One manages to trump the former just from sheer acting chutzpah and deliberate yet intelligent pacing. Another facet I found fascinating was Odets use of natural, everyday faces to populate this meller. From the middle-aged insurance seller with his hearing aid, to Katherine Squire's craggy teeth, one sees this is a story that could possibly be culled from a newspaper, relating the plight of the ugly, common man and not some glamorpuss Hollywoodized actor playing him.

Excellent performances from all, and especially a rare performance from Sanford Meisner. Great direction and intensity from Clifford Odets. A rather simple story superbly told. Jerry Wald Producer. View All Critic Reviews 0. See Movies in Theaters. There are no approved quotes yet for this movie.
