Skills mapped to the heavy attack button O cost more MP and do more damage than skills mapped to the Light Attack button X. Additionally, different skills can be mapped to each button for short and long range attacks, so you'll perform a different skill if you attack an enemy who is far away than if you attack a nearby enemy. Some skills are much more suited for long or short range attacks - but any skill can be assigned to any button, so think about the different skills before deciding what skills to map to what button.
A single skill can be mapped to multiple buttons if you like. If you only have one skill or one skill that you like you can map that skill to all 4 combat skill buttons. They are powerful attacks that consume MP. However, while Battle Skills usually involve moving the user around the battlefield, Signeturgy is cast while the user stands in place. Signeturgy can be assigned to buttons and used just like Combat Skills.
All signeturgy spells are ranged, so you don't need to worry much about your proximity to the target. Signeturges generally get more spells than warriors get battle skills, and the effects of these skills vary more widely, making choice of spell very important and versatile. Also, while all Battle Skills are direct attack abilities, Signeturgy has more functions. In addition to attacks, there are spells to heal your party, cause and remove status effects, and make your allies stronger and enemies weaker.
Remember that you need to cycle through enemies with R1 and L1 to select the target you want. Otherwise, you could try to attack an enemy and find your character running all the way across the battlefield to attack someone you didn't even know existed.
This is a very nice shortcut for when you don't have time to cycle through all the enemies on the screen looking for the guy who's beating the crap out of you. Alternately, you could go into the settings and change the targeting to semi-automatic, which will make your character always just target the closest enemy.
This is kind of nice, but can also be a hassle when you're trying to target a specific enemy and another enemy keeps running up and getting too close, shifting your targeting from your intended target. It's probably best to just get used to the manual targeting. Roles serve a dual purpose. Setting the right roles on a character can make them behave the way you want them to, and generally make them more efficient in combat.
Reserve Rush is a bar that fills up as you perform well in the rock paper scissors dynamic. As mentioned earlier, it's better not to worry about trying to win the dynamic, and instead concentrate on finding opportunities to attack, and then building up a combo while the hits keep your enemies staggered.
If you do this, you'll win the rock papers scissors dynamic by default and will slowly charge the Reserve Rush bar. The Green portion of the bar represents how well you're doing on your counter-attacks.
The green bar raises a lot when you successfully guard and counter a light attack by an enemy. You earn SP with successful counter attacks. The Blue portion of the bar represents how well you're doing on your strong attacks. The blue bar raises whenever you successfully land a strong attack - and raises more if you land a strong attack on a blocking opponent. You earn extra Fol by breaking enemies guard. The Pink portion of the bar represents how well you're doing on your weak attacks.
The pink bar raises whenever you successfully land a weak attack that isn't blocked. You receive extra EXP for landing light attacks. Various things will make you lose reserve rush. When one of these things occurs you will lose from all three bars. If you're hit with a weak attack without blocking, you lose reserve rush. If you're hit with a strong attack while you are blocking, you lose a lot of reserve rush.
If you attack with a weak attack and the enemy blocks and counterstrikes, you lose a lot of reserve rush. The amount you lose, depends on how high your bars are. The higher your bar, the more you'll lose from that bar any time anything goes wrong. In order to charge reserve rush up to level 5, you have to be doing extremely will in all three bars. Usually, the green bar will be your bottleneck. It's very difficult to get counter-attacks when you have a party full of 6 people hammering away at enemies and interrupting their attacks.
This makes it nearly impossible to charge your reserve rush up past level 4, and if you get it up to level 5, you won't likely keep it at that level for long. A single misstep will knock you back down to level 4. The higher the bar gets, the less reward you get when you perform correctly and the greater the punishment for making a mistake.
Once charged, the Reserve Rush bar has two purposes. However, you don't get as big of a bonus as it seems. In order to get the full bonus, you have to use a Reserve Rush attack during the fight. So don't hoard this, thinking you'll keep it all and get more Exp.
The best way to earn Exp. You only gain the full bonus if you use the full Reserve Rush bar. Using only one bar will provide only a partial bonus. Different characters have different reserve rush abilities. Miki's ability actually heals the party, rather than attacking enemies. But generally speaking, Fidel's Reserve Rush is far more powerful than anyone else's, and you should always use Fidel if you're going to unleash a Reserve Rush against a boss. Other characters can be better for other purposes, like if you want to kill 5 enemies at once for the battle trophy - which is easy to do with Fiore's Reserve Rush that hits all enemies once for big damage.
But there's one more important thing to note about Reserve Rush. You always want to use Reserve Rush with the character you have selected - for reasons that will become clear in the next section.
The default setting allows you to select which character uses Reserve Rush. It doesn't have to be the character you're currently controlling.
This is a needless extra step that makes it harder to use. But you can change this setting in the game Settings. That way you don't need to concern yourself with making sure the character you have selected is also selected to use Reserve Rush.
I'll cover the controls for using Reserve Rush here, just because it's the last thing you need to know, and will eliminate the need for another section just for that. A full Reserve Rush bar has 5 bars. You can use any number of bars in a single attack. The more bars you use, the stronger your attack becomes.
To select the number of bars to use, hold R2 and press L2 to cycle through the desired number of bars. So, all that said, what you're going to do is to avoid enemies until you see an opening, then run up and start a combo, preferably when you see an enemy guard.
This will give you the most bang for your buck with your MP, using it to unleash devastating Battle Skills that do double damage!
