An imaginative Disney version of the Robin Hood legend. Fun and romance abound as the swashbuckling hero of Sherwood Forest and his valiant sidekick plot one daring adventure after another to outwit the greedy Prince John Sir Peter Ustinov and his partner as they put the tax squeeze on the poor. Parental Guide. I think much of this is because kids don't think like many adults.
Many adults will see the film and think "wow Nor can I imagine most kids hating the music--although lines like "Oodelally, Oodeelally Golly What a Day" are truly insipid and annoying. And, kids won't likely think "Wow My feeling is that this film is a great way to illustrate the doldrums in which Disney Studio was in at the time. The film simply isn't in the same league as their better films. Robin Hood mayn't have the direct charm or the memorable songs of the later Disney movies, but it is solid entertainment nonetheless.
The animation is generally lovely, if slightly archaic which is a style I kind of like, but the story sometimes fails to engage being fairly episodic but this is only occasionally. But the action highlight was the archery contest, which was so funny, as was the witty and delightful script. You will find in it no Lincoln green, not to mention the eye-popping Technicolor of Errol Flynn's ensemble; no battle on the extension with Little John; no toxophilism challenges; no slamming portcullises or disappear to Sherwood Forest; no Norman knight twisting his lip and requesting blood.
For sure, for the principal half-hour or so we are welcome to ponder whether Crowe is "Robin Hood" by any means. He is acquainted with us as one Robin Longstride, healthy bowman of an English armed force returning through France following 10 years' hard trudge in the Holy Land. Asked by his lord, Richard the Lionheart, for a genuine perspective of the campaign, Robin offers it to him straight: they killed numerous honest Muslims.
Excessively legit — the lord demonstrates to a greater degree a Lyin' Heart by applauding him in the stocks. Yet, a possibility for reclamation takes after when, on the demise of Richard, Robin and three of his not really happy men interfere with a snare, and figure out how to save the late lord's crown, now in transit to Richard's beneficiary in London.
Too awful it's his touchy, debauched sibling John. Another cheapie indie cash-in of a Hollywood blockbuster, this time around the Guy Ritchie film which was inself pretty diabolical, it has to be said. This time around the actor who plays Robin brings no charisma to the role at all, while most of the screen time is given over to the gurning bad guys, including a Sheriff of Nottingham who wanders around naked unfortunately for the viewer for long scretches.
The fight scenes are among the worst I've seen recently - so slow and stilted - while the anachronisms keep on coming including Marian wearing a corset beneath her clothes. Amid the amateur cast members, poor old Brian Blessed has a cameo and Martyn Ford doesn't cover up his tattoos, even though they're certainly not of the period. The film opens by giving you the "historical" background. Robin and Marion are already living in the forest.
When Marion is kidnapped, Robin forms a rescue party of 3 bad actors and a blind Vultan. The dialogue and fighting choreography approached comical. Not the worst Robin Hood film out there no zombies but it tries to be. Guide: No swearing. Male nudity. In this, latest, iteration our Lincoln green hero is depicted by a completely charm-free Ben Freeman aided and abetted by James G.
Brian Blessed stands out as the only one with a clue what this is all about as "Friar Tuck" but the rest of this looks, and sounds, little better than a 2nd year university film studies effort.
Why on earth do people continue to rehash established stories like this?
